We speak to Gino D’Acampo
We were recently visited by one of the nation’s most-loved celebrity chef’s Gino D’Acampo as he came to the centre to sign copies of his new cookery book, Gino’s Pasta. And as massive food lovers here at Bullring we managed to catch-up with Gino to find out what makes his perfect restaurant experience, his favourite cuisine and what inspires him…
“I’ve visited Birmingham many times and always had terrific food. Of course, it’s famous for what is generally regarded as Indian cuisine, so I always make sure I have a balti or a curry” Gino told us when we asked him about his experiences of the city of Birmingham – it seems that he’s pleased with what the city has to offer!
Gino confesses (unsurprisingly) that his favourite cuisine is of course Italian and his latest book Gino’s Pasta and brand-new iPhone app Eating Italian showcases lots of yummy Italian recipes. And when asked about what inspires him when he’s cooking he tells us “I like to make people happy and since I was a little boy, I noticed how great food brings everyone together and creates a marvellous, warm atmosphere. So you could say that making people happy is what inspires me.”
With the St Martin’s Square area currently undergoing a transformation with the addition of three new restaurants we asked Gino what makes his ideal restaurant setting and he told us he likes a nice, relaxing atmosphere not too dark and gloomy. And he suggests that diners experiment with their food by ordering new dishes. He says “Just decide you are going to break away from simply re-ordering or cooking the same handful of things you’ve become used to. People are often cautious, thinking, ‘Perhaps I won’t like it’, or ‘I know I like steak, so I’ll have that again.’ Occasionally, order something you’ve never tried before – or attempt a new recipe at home.”
And finally we asked Gino for his one key cooking tip to share with you Browse: Bullring members… “I’ll give you two. 1 – buy food that is fresh and in season. No more strawberries in December, please. 2 – get my books!”
Did you manage to come and meet Gino when he was here? Did he sign your cookbook? What’s your favourite recipe? You can let us know by commenting below!
