The Spiceal Street art project is revealed…

During the Spiceal Street build we teamed up with We Are Birmingham to find four artists to create artwork to sit on the hoardings around the Spiceal Street development. Here we take a look back at the artists and the artwork…

James Thomson is an award winning structural engineer, artist and designer and has had his work exhibited at various exhibitions and projects. James has adopted a very unique technique to create the artwork that will be featured on the hoardings and has incorporated the thoughts, opinions and pictures of some of Bullring’s shoppers.

Our second artist is Birmingham born and bred Matt Murtagh, who is a photographer and filmmaker. Matt graduated from Birmingham Institute of Art and Design and used a technique that documented the changing landscapes of the city, both on an architectural and human scale. Matt is also the Artistic Director at the We Are Birmingham shop.

Tom Tebby, Birmingham based artist and graphic designer uses the city as inspiration and canvas for much of his work. Having been exhibited worldwide including ‘Go Get Your Shine Box’ at Brooklynite Gallery in New York, Tom created a piece of artwork that takes inspiration from the architectural details of Bullring and Birmingham.

Our fourth and final artist is Carl Booth. Carl joined BBC’s graphic design studio after leaving college and designed title sequences and motion graphics for a number of TV shows including Crime Watch and Top Gear. His inspiration partly comes from being dyslexic and he is very interested in how intelligence and worth is measured.

You can see pictures of the artwork above. A big thank you to everybody who sent us their thoughts about the perfect dining experience – make sure you take a look at James’ artwork to see if you can spot your words!

A good dining experience = something hot and spicy on your plate, something sparkling in your glass, witty conversation and knowing someone else is footing the bill!

Ps Fish and chips in paper with lots of salt and vinegar, or white wine spritzers al fresco also do the trick!
