Between Friday 1st and Monday 7th June  Umberto Giannini will be launching a 50’s and 60’s themed StyleBar where clients can choose from iconic Hollywood up-do’s and styles from just £15.00.  

As an added pampering plus, the salon have teamed up with cult British beauty brand Illamasquawho will compliment the hair looks with exclusive complimentary vintage eye make-overs for Jubilee StyleBar clients, so you can get glammed up for those street parties and celebrations.

The salon will be decorated with a jubilee theme and the team will be embracing the trend in 50’s and 60’s outfits. Clients will even receive delicious cupcakes and traditional lemonade to enjoy during their hair services, delightful.

The counter is divine, adorned with every Chanel nail polish that is currently available ranging from the brand’s most popular shade Rouge Noir 18 to bright pinks for the summer months.

I took a seat at the counter and was greeted by Sara who works at the counter. Firstly I was asked to select the colour I wanted to use – I choose Blue Rebel 553, a colour, which was recently launched for the summer and I thought was Bostin (!) – before Sara filed my nails.

I was then treated to the most relaxing hand massage, using the Body Excellence Nourishing and Rejuvenating Hand Cream. I hadn’t expected this as part of the treatment so it was a welcome surprise!

Sara then ‘squeaked’ my nails, which removes any excess grease to ensure that the nail polish goes on properly. It’s named ‘squeaking’ as it literally squeaks on your nails!

Then it was onto the painting and firstly a protective base coat with anti-staining was applied before the nail polish. The nail polish went on very easily and only required two coats to offer a finished look. Finally the Extreme Shine Nail Lacquer was applied to ensure that the polish didn’t chip.

The service is available for £20, which is redeemable against any products at the counter. The pampering treat also includes a complimentary lip colour application where you can choose from any of Chanel’s lipsticks/glosses to compliment your nails.

This summer is all about Capri pants, pretty tops and high-waisted skirts, colours ranging from fresh pastels to bright tropical hues. The fifties style was a continuation of the forties’ glamorous feminine looks but was less serious and more about being beautiful enough to capture a man, this summer think feminine a la Dior’s 1940s ‘New Look’ meets Grease via Hairspray!

50s inspired hair is all about soft, set curls but think neat less geometric than the victory rolls that have been popular in 2011, think softer and more tousled. To capture the look keep in mind:-

The 50s saw the hood dryer available at home meaning rollers could set faster than having to be left overnight, hair could be styled at home and got bigger towards the end of the decade (the hairdryer broke through towards the end of the decade).

Hair colour was glossy and natural, at the start of the 50s 7% of women coloured their hair and by the end of the decade over half of women did. For 50s colour icons think Marilyn Monroe, Audrey Hepburn and Lucille Ball

By 1950 hairspray as we know it today was launched commercially and spread globally by 1955 giving women the armour to create big lasting styles, my favourite spray for strong hold which brushes out is Design Line Texture Tousle.

The ponytail was the essential rock and roll hairstyle, as guys experimented with quiffs, girls experimented with styling their hair off their face. 

To rock the ponytail this summer try sectioning your hair ear to ear so you have two parts, then tie bottom section high, just below your crown. Work Redken Powder grip 03 into your roots of the front section then back comb your roots, finally use another band to secure the hair so that both sections of hair create one ponytail with a volumised quiff on top. For other ponytail inspiration think of a short fringe and parting like Audrey Hepburn and for statement think Gwen Stefani.

Over the last few years there has been a gradual resurgence for all things 50’s inspired. From homewear and crafts, TV and film to fashion and beauty. Think Marilyn Monroe or Ava Gardner meets modern day ….simple, chic and full of sexy attitude. This look has been taken on by everyone from Dita Von Teese to Gwen Stefani to Scarlet Johansson in their own particular way.

How do you capture an essence of this style… I hear you ask….and still make it your own?

There are a few very classic elements to this type of look and the key is to give it your own twist.

Classic element 1
Creamy skin: Update this element by using new, smarter foundation formulas. Gone are the days of ‘heavy’ foundation, think lightweight, fresh and real when making your choices. I love M.A.C Mineralize Satinfinish Foundation for a dewy effect and great on drier skins. Or if you battle with controlling oil, M.A.C Pro Longwear Foundation is an incredible lightweight formula that last for up to 8hours on the skin. Genius.

Classic Element 2
The eye. So we’re all familiar with the ‘Marilyn’ style eye, soft neutral blended socket line and a subtle black flicked eye liner. The traditional way to create this is using matte eye shadows such as M.A.C Eyeshadow in Blanc Type and Copperplate, a cool beige and an earthy grey. Liner can be added in a flicked way using super easy product like M.A.C Penultimate Eye Liner, a felt tip style black pen. It’s classic and beautiful but it’s time to give it a 2012 revamp.

I’d suggest adding a modern hint of texture to the eye in the form of a multi-use product such as M.A.C Cream Colour Base in Pearl. It’s light and easily applied with a clean fingertip, the creamy champagne shade is great for light to medium skin tones, for deeper skin try a richer golden shade M.A.C Cream Colour Base in Improper Copper. This can replace the matte style shadows and will look great with your flicked liner.

Changing your black liquid liner for a different type and shade can also be an interesting change. I love M.A.C Kohl Pencils in Blooz, a midnight navy blue, or M.A.C Kohl Pencil in Prunella, a rich blackened plum shade. These can be applied in a flicked manner to capture the essence of the ‘Marilyn’ liner, and then smudged to give a more worn in rock n roll feel.

Classic Element 3
The Lip. Wearing a statement red lip is like putting on a pair of killer red stiletto shoes. You instantly feel confident and like a force to be reckoned with.

The traditional strong lip would be created using products such as M.A.C Lipsticks in Lady Danger, an orange red, or M.A.C Ruby Woo, a cool red.

Give this dynamic feature a new twist by making it more relaxed. Apply a shade such as M.A.C Lipstick in Ramblas Red, a luscious brick red, using your finger tips and gently pressing it into the lip and the result will be a fabulous fresh stain.

So now we know all the elements, the traditional and newer revamped suggestions for wearing them. Choose which are your favourites to wear; it may be a stained lip and a slightly glossy eye for one person. For the next it may be a navy blue smudged liner and strong cold red lip. The choice is yours… Don’t be afraid to mix it up….  and remember sometimes less is more. Pick your elements to suit your mood.
